The Fruit of the Spirit

Theme: Character · Galatians 5:22-23

Scripture Passage

Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

Introduction

This week we turn to Galatians 5:22-23 as we consider the theme of character. The apostle Paul, writing urgently to churches he had planted in the region of Galatia wrote to Gentile believers in Galatia who were being pressured by false teachers to adopt Jewish law as a requirement for salvation during a time of the tension between freedom and licence was a real concern in greco-roman society, and paul addresses it by showing that true freedom produces godly character. The passage speaks to the heart of what it means to live faithfully in every season. As you read this week, allow the words to shape your understanding of God's character and your response to him.

Background

Galatians 5:22-23 was written in the context of the churches of galatia were in crisis, with some members turning away from the gospel of grace to embrace a gospel of works. Galatia was a Roman province in central Asia Minor, and its churches were small communities navigating both Roman culture and Jewish influence and the galatian controversy centred on whether gentile believers needed to follow the mosaic law, and paul argues that the spirit, not the law, produces righteousness shaped the world of the original readers. The Greek word karpos (karpos, G2590) carries the meaning of fruit, produce, result, the natural outcome of an organic process. The Greek word karpos emphasises that spiritual character is not manufactured by human effort but grows naturally from a life connected to Christ, much as fruit grows from a healthy vine.

This week's focus on character through Galatians 5:22-23 continues to build the narrative of our year together. Next week we will turn to Spiritual Disciplines, exploring the theme of discipleship. As you finish this week, consider how the themes of character connect to what lies ahead.
